1. Painting with watercolors is about creating different layers. The more layers, the darker you can create shade and detail. Start filling in your poster, lightly coloring in the different larger zones. Once the color has dried, you can go back and add shadows where needed. Remember to leave small areas light or completely white to show shine or to create shape, like on the palm tree and Frankenstein’s pants for example.
2. Using different tones of the same color can also help create depth and shading. For example, on the the building we first added a light layer of blue, then purple on the roof, then more darker purple to create shadows. Adding small lines or dots can also help create a pattern, like the roof of the houses.
